Choosing Pot Size
Bigger pots hold more water and buffer temperature swings, so they are more forgiving. As rough guidance: herbs and lettuce are happy in six to eight inches of depth, bushy plants like peppers want ten to twelve inches, and tomatoes and other large plants need a five-gallon container or larger. Every pot must have drainage holes. Wider is generally better than taller for stability and root spread.
