Drainage
Roots need air as well as water, and standing water drives them out. Containers need open drainage holes - a layer of gravel in the base does not help and can make things worse. Use a proper potting mix rather than garden soil, which compacts in pots. For raised beds on hard ground, loosen the soil underneath before filling so water can escape downward.
