Once the basics are covered, useful additions include a soil thermometer for timing spring sowings, a moisture meter if you tend to over- or under-water, a hori-hori knife that combines digging and cutting, a wheelbarrow or garden cart for moving soil and compost, and a drip irrigation kit on a timer to make watering consistent and hands-off.
