Start with the least drastic option. A strong jet of water knocks aphids and mites off. Hand-picking works for caterpillars and slugs. Row cover keeps flying pests off vulnerable crops. Encouraging predators - ladybirds, lacewings, birds - keeps numbers down for free. If you need a spray, insecticidal soap and neem are effective on soft-bodied pests and break down quickly; apply in the evening to protect bees.
