Signs of Over- and Under-watering
Underwatered plants wilt, their soil pulls away from the pot edge, and lower leaves go crisp and brown. Overwatered plants also wilt - because the roots are suffocating - but the soil stays wet, leaves yellow, and the base may go soft or smell sour. When in doubt, push a finger two inches into the soil: water if it is dry at that depth, wait if it is still damp.
