When and How to Feed Plants
Feed when plants are actively growing, not when they are dormant or stressed by drought. Most annual vegetables benefit from a feed at transplanting and then every few weeks through the main growing period. Water the soil first so the roots are not dry, apply the fertilizer to damp soil, and water again to carry it down to the root zone. Switch fruiting crops to a lower-nitrogen feed once they begin to flower.
